Back on My Feet Alumni Program
Updated: February 1, 2012What is the Back on My Feet Alumni Program?
It all starts with the run. Your day, your smile, your hugs, your first accomplishment before the sun is even up. What if after that point, you still couldn't engage with friends and family? Would you falter?
In the Back on My Feet alumni program we focus on what happens after the run. We consider not only how our members are supported long-term and beyond their team, but also what happens when they seek independent housing and are re-employed. How do we seek to make sure healthy lifestyles remain intact? That's where you and the alumni support system come in.
What is the mission of this program?
The mission of this program is to provide a continuum for the Back on My Feet community beyond the time when a residential member exits his or her facility and begins living independently. This transition is a very delicate time for our members as they continue on their path to a successful recovery from chemical addictions, social disorders or long-standing illness.
In order to continue the positive gains achieved during participation with Back on My Feet at a facility, a common link needs to be established with that member. One of the primary reasons for success in the Back on My Feet program is the personal one-on-one connection that is achieved. The alumni program should be no different and, thus, is driven by those same interactions.
Developing consistent expectations and goals for the Alumni program is crucial for all involved in the process. Providing that link gives members a tremendous tool to continue their healthy lifestyle choices. At Back on My Feet, we are not here to "save" members; we are here to provide support, friendship and engagement as our members transition back into the workforce and independent living. We feel that personal connections and one-on-one relationships are critical in building upon the success of the team environment.
How can I help?
In each city, we are looking for "Buddies," non-residential members who will be paired with a residential member prior to his or her moving out to maintain a close personal connection to the program. Initial interactions are facilitated by the Back on My Feet program director, but subsequent interactions are handled by the residential alumni member and Buddy. Buddies and alumni members agree to meet or correspond for a minimum of 1 hour total per week. This can be by phone, getting together for coffee or going for a run - the key is spending time together, not a specific activity. There is no financial commitment, and money is never exchanged between Buddies and alumni. Specifics of engagement, suggestions for meeting locations and activities will be covered in orientation. Prior to starting, each Buddy will receive a manual of frequently asked questions.
Who can be a Buddy?
Potential Buddies need to have been running with a Back on My Feet team for at least four months. Preference is given to current or previous core-members and team leaders, as experience with the Back on My Feet program is important. Back on My Feet staff will handle the pairing.
How can I learn more?
Orientations for the first round of Buddies will be starting in early 2011 in each city and will take place every other month. At orientation, the specifics of engagement will be covered and discussed. If you would like more information or to attend an orientation, please fill out the form below!
